I’m creating a VERY large scale art installation of envelopes (a lot of them, say 80,000).

If you are able to help by collecting your envelopes and start saving them, I would be extremely grateful.

Australian visual artist Saskia Moore is re-creating her award winning sculpture “The Fold” for Tang Contemporary Art, Beijing September 2012.  

“The Fold” is a large-scale installation of used envelopes - collected by many hundreds of people from around the world.

Saskia is asking people all over the world to participate by collecting the envelopes you have received in the mail.

The envelope collection process (very easy):

1.          Start collecting envelopes you receive. Please try to open / rip the envelope open from the top of the envelope.

2.          Regular standard size envelopes are preferable but styles and colours of envelopes are accepted.

3.           Start a collection at home and also encourage co-workers to start a collection at your workplace.

4.           The collection period is for a very short time. The collection of envelopes must be posted (airmail) by September 10 to Tang Contemporary Art

5.            Please post your collection of envelopes to:

Important Information:

There is NO intention to identify or show the sender or recipient of the envelopes. To ensure privacy, please ensure to mark out names and addresses on the envelopes.

The envelopes become part of a large-scale artwork installation – an exploration of scale, pattern and volume.

Once received by Tang Contemporary Art, the collected envelopes become the sole property of the artist.

Pneuma (πνεύμα) is an ancient Greek word for “breath,” and in a religious context for “spirit” or “soul.” It has various technical meanings for medical writers and philosophers of classical antiquity, particularly in regard to physiology, and is also used in Greek translations of the Hebrew Bible and in the Greek New Testament. In classical philosophy, it is distinguishable from psyche (ψυχή), which originally meant “breath of life”, but is regularly translated as “spirit” or most often “soul”.
